Thredbo, Australia
Thredbo is in the Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales - 500km south of Sydney.
The one bad point about Thredbo is, being in a Natonal park, that you need to stick to specified trails - none of this 'scrubbin' business.
From here on in, there are nothing but good points. Thredbo has an excellent 6km Cross- Country trail which, free of charge, is open to the public all summer. The trail is amixture of fire trail, single track and tricky rocky sections guaranteed to test out your suspension (if you have any).
Thredbo is also a mecca for downhillers and home to the famous "Raw NRG Cannonball run" which offers a 4.2km, 600m vertical, downhill track with chairlift access. If you're a newbie to downhill or have'nt got the gear, the "Raw NRG" shop has bikes and body-armour for hire, and provides any maintenance or tuition you may need.
There are also some great half and full day, downhill rides not far from Thredbo on fire trails with plenty of water bars to jump off. These rides take you through some magnificent high-country terrain with awesome forests and wildlife.
Thredbo is a resort town, this cannot be forgotten - meaning the place is always in a holiday or party mode. There are lots of places to stay, from cottages and self contained apartments to classy hotels. There are also many cafes to grab a coffee after a long day of riding.
If you can time your visit to Thredbo carefully, entertainment is hardly a problem if you manage to catch one of the many music festivals. There are also Fat Tire Festivals held here, atrracting a crew of keen riders every time.
Further information may be obtained from the Raw NRG website - www.rawnrg.com.au
Oh yeah ... watch out for the March Flies !
I have included a photo of Chris Kovarik getting a little airtime off one of the many waterbars at Thredbo and a photo of someone going through "The Berms" at Thredbo.
