Just discovered this great site and reviewed a section on pedal selection: platform vs clipless. While I agree with all the comments, one great option was omitted. Namely, multi-release cleats from Shimano (SH-56 I think). Unlike the standard cleats which come stock with shimano pedals, these allow the rider to release, with a harder jerk than would be used in an upstroke, in virtually any direction. I swear by them. OK not for racers as very occasionally you’ll come unclipped unintentionally, but for the rest of us they work great. I’ve been in numerous tricky situations (mild to endos) that have required me to get my foot down while concentrating on something other than being clipped in. They’ve worked admirably in all conditions.

On bikes with FSR full-suspensions (Specialized) the cable housing under the bottom bracket must be long enough to allow for lengthening due to the pivot action during shock compression. Specialized replaced my frame and a local dealer built up the bike. It took me a while to realize that the phantom shifting only occurred during compression. At that point I let the air out of the shock to easily watch how the cable tightened and loosened under compression. The solution was simple: a longer cable housing and of course a new cable. Now only the arc of the cable housing changes during shock compression and rebound. Cost $20, sanity: priceless.

"Over the past 3 1/2 years, I've logged over 25,000 miles, most of it to and from work and much of it at night. I've experimented with single and double halogen headlamps and become pretty comfortable with the idea of nightime riding.
When I received my ARC system a year ago, I was somewhat skeptical how a single beam of light might outperform my dual beam halogen headlamps. All it took was one ride. Wow. The clean, powerful beam was much "whiter" than halogen light and allowed me to make out even the smallest pieces of glass, sand or rocks on the road. Even at 45 mph descents, I could never outrun this powerful beam.
Most impressive is how the bright spot beam evenly transitions and spreads to a very wide area of ambient light, allowing you to point the light at almost any angle and still get enough "fill" to easily see everything in and around your path.
I've had motorists stop and ask what kind of light I had, and when I pass runners that are running opposite traffic in the bike lane, they're literally blinded and always jump out of my way. Yes, I get sort of a perverse pleasure in making runners move out of the bike lane as I approach.
This year I decided to check out the same ARC headlamp, but with Light & Motion's new Lithium Ion battery, which they boast takes about a half-pound out of the old nickel metal hydride water bottle cage battery they marketed. For weight freaks, a complete ARC Li-ion system, including lamp, wiring and battery, dials you in at less than a pound!"

SweetskinZ launched in 1999 with the goal of revolutionizing the bicycle tire. With that in mind, the company developed the world’s first tire featuring a variety of full-color graphics and patterns that are also reflective at night. This combination makes SweetskinZ tires not only the best looking tire on the market, but also enhances the safety of the rider.
SweetskinZ was conceived by combining a passion for cycling with a drive to design high-quality, personalized products. For SweetskinZ tires, the company had one simple objective in mind: to not only produce one of the best quality tires on the market but to infuse style, flash and increase visibility so both serious and recreational riders can express their personalities on the vert ramp or the trail.
Initial product designs are geared towards the daring BMX rider, the relaxing beach cruiser and the adventurous mountain biker. SweetskinZ tires feature the highest quality rubber combined with today’s most popular tread patterns. SweetskinZ tires also maintain excellent tread life and performance with minimal additional weight.
SweetskinZ innovative designs leave traditional black tires in the dust. Whether it be the slithering scales of the "Rattleback" tire or the red-hot flames of the "Scorch" tire, every product in the SweetskinZ line makes a bold, unique statement, as individual as each rider.
SweetskinZ is living the dream of having successfully transitioned from a promising idea to a company poised to revolutionize the industry. The passionate, talented management team shares a vision and will collectively lead SweetskinZ into the future.
The "Idea Factory" at SweetskinZ will continue to develop bold, new designs that will redefine the way people think about cycling and tires are only the beginning…

I am very pleased to be purchasing my stuff from you guys...
Your have low prices (admittedly important) but then your environmental policy convinced me over other sellers.
You should make more of a point to advertise this, not just to capitalise on it, but to show shoppers that they can have an impact, even in just how they order their bike bits. You should also tell them what a difference it makes - eg which courier to choose, what exactly you do with your packaging, which products are enviro friendly (Pedros recycled grips etc)...
Keep up the good work and let us know how you continue to save the environment.
cheers

Dear Stan,
A dangerous new Forest Service policy could close hundreds of miles of singletrack in two states. This potentially precedent-setting change must be stopped before it spreads to Maryland and other states. Act now to preserve mountain bike access to singletrack in backcountry areas.
"This could become the largest access issue in five years," warns Jenn Dice, IMBA's government affairs director. This policy would expel mountain bikers from more than 700 miles of singletrack in Montana and Idaho and, if left unchallenged, could set national precedent.
What You Can Do:
Take Action! Tell the Forest Service that bicycles should not be categorically banned from Recommended Wilderness. Our easy online form takes seconds to complete. Deadline: Sept. 7
Donate to the IMBA Legal Fund. Swift response to issues like this takes preparation and money. Your donation will help ensure that IMBA's rapid response team is ready to act when an access issue strikes in your backyard.
Forward to a Friend. The Forest Service needs to know how many mountain bikers care. Our chance of saving mountain biking access improves with each cyclist who submits a comment.
Protection of Recommended Wilderness areas is very important to mountain bikers. These lands are roadless, free of development or resource extraction, and loaded with miles of backcountry singletrack and scenery to explore.
Most national forests allow existing uses like bicycling to continue in areas recommended to possibly become Wilderness, before the formal Wilderness designation takes place. Unfortunately, forests in Montana and northern Idaho will not. Banning bicycles from these areas could have far-reaching negative consequences and lead to trail closures in your national forests.
Normally, the Forest Service is very positive towards mountain biking and the Montana and Idaho policy is a departure from other Forest Service regions.
IMBA needs mountain bicyclists coast-to-coast to take action, asking the Forest Service to protect the land and continue bicycle access - they can do both!
Involvement and donations from riders like you make a difference in defending our sport. Please learn more about this issue or take action now!
Sincerely,
IMBA Advocacy Team

Hello Stan,
Thank you for your generous $35.00 donation to IMBA's Legal Fund.
Your Stumpjumper book will arrive in 2 to 4 weeks.
Your donation will be used to defend mountain biking. It will support three crucial areas of IMBA’s work:
Spearhead the development of risk management resources
Defend against daily attacks on local trail systems
Influence legislation that determines access for mountain bikers
This is an ambitious list of projects. That's why the mountain bike movement's goal is to raise $60,000 toward IMBA's Legal Fund. Please encourage your fellow riders to match your donation.
Sincerely,
Scott Gordon

Call for Entries for the 2006 Boston Bike Film Festival

BOSTON - (May 3, 2006) Organizers for the 2nd annual Boston Bike Film Festival ask filmmakers with a penchant for cycling to submit their work to be shown this October at venues in and around Boston. Among other benefits to acclaimed and amateur filmmakers, the Festival offers a chance to get their films in front of audiences who are intrigued and influential to the quality of cycling nationwide.
"Last year's near-sellout crowds was a wakeup call for me," said Cat Bryant, executive director of the Festival. "That the Boston bike community showed so much interest by filling theaters both nights was an action louder than words. Bolstered by the success of the first Festival, we hope to reach an even wider audience this year."
Film concepts from last year's festival ranged from documenting a spectacular crash to illustrating life in "SUV City," to exposing political bias against cyclists both during and after the Republican National Convention held in New York City in August 2004. Types of films included animated shorts, digitally enhanced clips, and feature length documentaries. To view clips from last year's festival, visit www.bostonbikefilmfest.org
Submissions for preview should be 30, 60, or 90 minutes long and should be either VHS or DVD. Early-bird submissions must be postmarked by August 18 and all submissions must be received by September 24, 2006. Signed Submission and Release forms should accompany each entry.
Festival information and details for submissions can be found at www.bostonbikefilmfest.org
About the Boston Bike Film Festival
If art exists in movement, then the bicycle becomes a vehicle for creativity. The Boston Bike Film Festival exists as a creative outlet for filmmakers to present their work in a personal yet professional format. Since its inception in 1997, the Boston Bike Film Festival has succeeded in bringing cycling-related topics to the silver screen and thus has given audiences a "bigger picture" of the culture of cycling through the medium of film.

February 25, 2006
Hello to all of my Mountain Bike Weekend Friends:
You cant believe what a relief it is not having to worry about all of
the many details that go, er, went into preparing for our annual outing.
However, it seems like Im the only one to get any joy out of the fact
that MBW is no more.
There have been a couple of false starts at a revival. There was the
Tamaqua thing we discussed at last years MBW. I was prepared to help
that town take over the event. But they decided that they didnt have
the resources, at least for 2006.
Then, toward the end of the year, there was a flurry of interest in
relocating to the Philadelphia area. That, too, didnt pan out. So Im
going to suggest a kind of out-of-the-box fix for all of those who
havent had enough Mini-MBWs.
Heres how they will work. Pick any weekend in June. Pick a place to go
camping/riding with your immediate circle of friends. Agree to welcome
surprise visitors. Let me know the details: Time; description of
location; directions; duration of your stay; and an affirmation that
youll abide by the spirit of MBW, i.e. Enjoyment of sharing experiences
with, and absolute consideration for, other mountain bikers.
Ill list your information on a secret page, www.soeast.com/mini.htm,
which will be available only to people who have attended MBW. Please
visit it now and bookmark it so you can check it periodically. Your
event will be sanctioned as an Official Mini-Mountain Bike Weekend,
I have no idea how many takers Ill get: Maybe none, maybe 25 or 30. But
my goal is simple. Give all of you wonderful people some hope of
continuing the fun and camaraderie of this wonderful tradition. My hope
is a bit more complex: That one of these little flames will ignite and a
new, full-scale version of the event will evolve.
So get busy planning your own Mini-MBW, and let me know so I can begin
posting information.
By the way, check out YOUR quilt (picture attached). Its made from all
the shirts from the 20 years of MBW, with a bicycle-motif cloth
surround. It was presented to me by my inner sanctum of MBW advisers at
a recent holiday party. However, I feel Im only the steward. Someday
this will be on display as a public reminder of the fun we had together.
Ill entertain your ideas on that, as well.
Best to all of you. Hope to see you on the trail, some trail, this summer.
One last note. My mbw@soeast.com and mbwxx@soeast.com have become spam
magnets. As such, Im going to pull the plug on those address.
Henceforth, please contact me, on MBW matters, at dave@soeast.com.

Hi,
I wish to inform you about the accommodation and mountain biking
services that I have available in Urubamba, in the Sacred Valley, that
you or your members, or readers of your web site, may find suitable if
visiting the Cusco region of Peru.
As the new owner of Hospedaje Macha Wasi I can tell you that
improvements have been made to the property, including the installation
of a Solar Hot Water System with modern massage shower heads, and
management of the business to provide a better service that I think
offers the best value in the Urubamba Valley. Macha Wasi is a totally
non smoking environment.
Besides accommodation we also offer Mountain Bike Tours. Breakfasts are
also available and we also cater for Vegans. We can arrange transport
with sensible taxi drivers.
Our website (http://www.machawasi.com) has more information, including
prices, available about Macha Wasi in English, Spanish, French and
German. In the future, I will also be adding support for Italian and
Portuguese as well as other information pertinent to this region.
New routes are being investigated to add to those already listed which
include cycling along old Inca trails.
I would appreciate it if you could add a link to our web site. A 10%

IMBA Epic Rides: The best rides...forever.
Epic rides are why we love mountain biking. They create classic memories
and inspire us to save the trails. To fuel this passion, IMBA has selected
five outstanding routes as 2005 IMBA Epic Rides, adding to the 32 great
rides we've picked since '99.
2005 IMBA Epic selections:
- Left and Right Trails, Tsali, North Carolina
- Syllamo Trails, Syllamo, Arkansas
- Loon Lake Trail, McCall, Idaho
- Tahoe Meadows, Lake Tahoe, Nevada
- Seven Summits Trail, Rossland, British Columbia
View the 2005 Epics online: http://www.imba.com/epics/
The "Epic" designation is an honor given through a competitive application
process. IMBA Epics are at the top of many mountain bikers' "must-ride"
lists, and for that reason, IMBA provides information about the rides and
local attractions on its website to facilitate off-road adventures.
Nominate your trail for next year's IMBA Epic Ride designation at:
http://www.imba.com/epics/nominate_epic.html
In the past, IMBA has promoted celebratory events when designating Epics.
This year, to reduce the strain on local organizers, we will not promote
IMBA-sponsored events.

DIY: Build your own team for 24 Hours of Moab
MOAB, Utah (September 21, 2005) Akin to pumped-up personals listings, the Racer Message Board for this year's 24 Hours of Moab lists racers' strengths, weaknesses, and desires to race in the eleventh edition of this monumental, go-to event. Among the postings for racers seeking teams are teams seeking racers. The Message Board is there to help racers like Ilana Brito of Cambridge, Mass., who decided just this past weekend to travel to Moab for a mountain bike vacation around the same time as the 24 Hours of Moab, which takes place this year on October 15-16. Then she thought that since she'd be there anyway, well heck, she might as well enter the race.
"I was poking around the website," explained Brito, “and I can't remember if I was on the team page or the registration page but I decided that I wanted to get the most riding in while I was in Moab and racing seemed like a good way to do that."

Finding a team was easy for Brito and while her move to race at Moab may seem bold and sudden, it is far from uncommon. Racers moseying about the venue on race day dressed in sandwich boards that read “I need a team" or campsites posting signs that say “Looking for a racer" capture a gusto typical of mountain bikers. The main draw to 24 Hours of Moab could be its status as the biggest 24-hour race in North America, which makes for some spirited competition in a lively atmosphere. Or maybe it is the racecourse, which has a reputation as one of the longest, fastest, most challenging courses in the world. It is also one of the most scenic as it winds its way through the red-rock, high-desert, south of Moab. For an East Coaster like Brito, Moab itself becomes the main attraction since the desert landscape affords scenery usually available to her only in pictures.
To build your own team or find a team to race with for the 11th Annual 24 Hours of Moab, racers should visit The Racer Message Board at http://grannygear.com/Boards/index.php3?thread=3

24 Hours of Moab to Deliver Largest Solo Cash Purse in History of Sport
MOAB, Utah (September 1, 2005) The Bureau of Land Management approved an increase in the number of solo entries from 75 to 100 for the 11th Annual 24 Hours of Moab. While this increase will heighten competition in the solo category, the total amount of prize money up for grabs for soloists rises to $15,000, easily the largest cash purse offered since Granny Gear Productions created 24-hour ultra-endurance solo racing with John Stamstad in 1996.
Ultra-endurance Pro/Solo racers arrive at 24 Hours of Moab to do battle against one of the largest and most elite fields in the world. Many solo racers best more than half the teams. Even more impressive than that, some will log as many as 17 laps, more than 250 miles and 18,700 feet of climbing on some of the most rugged terrain around!
Throughout the race, Granny Gear Productions’ unprecedented, state-of-the-art, RealTime™ electronic scoring system broadcasts up-to-the-second real-time results on grannygear.com. Action Alert: Ask Senator Allen to Support Bike-friendly Wilderness Bill
Action Alert
Please help IMBA reach out to U.S. Senator George Allen (R-VA) by asking him
to co-sponsor the Virginia Ridge and Valley Act of 2005 (S. 942/H.R. 1975).
Working closely with the Virginia Wilderness Committee (VWC), IMBA has
helped forge an innovative bike-friendly agreement that will protect parts
of the Jefferson National Forest in southern Virginia as Wilderness.
Wilderness designations ban bicycle access and, traditionally, are
problematic for mountain bike advocates. However, the Virginia bill employs
boundary adjustments and diverse designations to protect riding
opportunities, and so could become an important model for other states.
The bill is endorsed by more than 100 organizations, including dozens of
businesses, local government officials, Virginia Wilderness Committee,
Virginia Audubon Council, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and local
mountain biking clubs.
U.S. Representative Rick Boucher (D-VA) and U.S. Senator John Warner (R-VA)
introduced the bill. With Senator Allen's support it has a good chance of
becoming law.
"This Wilderness legislation is the product of years of work," said Mark
Miller with the Virginia Wilderness Committee and the Southern Appalachian
Forest Coalition. "The agreement between mountain bikers and VWC provides a
framework for future cooperative efforts. We must all work together to help
the Virginia delegation get this bill passed."

MONTEREY, Calif. (June 1, 2005) - Light & Motion sponsored pro Cameron Chambers won the war of attrition at the NORBA Solo 24hr National Championships in Spokane, Washington this weekend. Battling intense heat and competition from 5 times World Champion Chris Eatough and 3 times National Champion Tinker Juarez; Chambers logged over 315 miles and consumed 14,000 calories to take first place.
Cameron waited till the sun set to make his charge up through the dehydrated field. The incredibly white even light from his Light & Motion ARC Li-ion allowing him to close and pass 5-times World Champion Chris Eatough during the night. The light weight Li-ion battery supplied more than enough run time for Cameron's support crew to focus on the the decisive factor in this years race-proper hydration and food.

"I used to always have problems with my drive train - poor shifting, broken chains, skipping gears, etc... it was one area of maintenance that required a lot of time and effort, not to mention the trailside breakdowns sometimes leaving me stranded, and the un-needed familiarity with my chain repair tool. Then, in 2002, I discovered ProGold Chain Lube and have used this product exclusively ever since. There are now less breakdowns, one-third the shifting problems, and less repair dollars spent - which translates into more FUN riding!!. All you need to do is develop the habit to use it regularly."
