ASHFORD, Conn. - (May 13, 2007) Perfect race weather in the mid-60's and a course that played to the strengths of skilled technical riders helped earn the Boston LUNA Chix its fourth podium finish of the season today at the Brialee Ramblin Rumble. The third race in the venerated Root 66 Race Series, the Ramblin Rumble brought nearly 250 racers from points all over New England to try their luck on some classic East Coast singletrack.
Team newcomer, Wendy Booher, seized an early lead in the women's 35+ category through the rutted, rock-littered, and mud-pocked singletrack only to give it up toward the end of the first lap.
"I wanted to ride a smooth, consistent race for my first race of the season," said Booher. "Eileen (Kelly-Foulston) and I swapped the lead and while I was hoping to rally more power and speed to catch her, I'll have to be content in the fact that there's always next time."
Booher's second place finish will add 55 points to the efforts of teammates, Roz Puleo and Dawn Kaczor, who earned points for the expert race earlier in the day.
Puleo and Kaczor lined up to match skills with a field studded with technique talent. In a league of her own, Kaczor reached for her Independent Fabrication single-speed this morning instead of a geared bike. It didn't take long for Kaczor to realize that a 14-tooth rear cog would cause too much suffering and that a 16-tooth cog would be a better fit for the tough terrain.
"Dawn's technical prowess is enviable," said Puleo. "Within minutes of our warm-up, she knew just what adjustments to make to her bike. She's one of the smartest racers I know.
After today's race, Puleo could land the next spot on "Dancing With the Stars" since, in her own words, her racing style resembled more "can-can" than bike racing due to a disconnect between her cleats and pedals. Puleo worked out a rhythm of "step-step-kick" to get her around the course and while her results may have suffered, her dance moves improved dramatically during today's race.
Next up for the Boston LUNA Chix is Redbones' 11th Annual Bike Party and Benefit, taking place Monday, May 14, starting at 5 pm. About LUNA and the Breast Cancer Fund
Support for the Breast Cancer Fund has been at the core of the LUNA brand since its launch in 1999. The two partner together on a variety of national initiatives including: LUNAFEST, a traveling women's short film festival, and Team LUNA Chix, a network of women's community based sports teams. Both programs raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Fund through local events.
It's a potent combination: LUNA is the best selling women's energy bar and Breast Cancer Fund's top corporate supporter. LUNA's commitment to women's issues, nutrition and environmental sustainability made them a perfect fit with the Breast Cancer Fund's precautionary, prevention-focused, and sustainable approach to protecting human health from toxic chemicals and dangerous, environmental exposures. Breast Cancer Fund's mission is to identify and eliminate the environmental - and preventable - causes of the disease. To date, LUNA has given over $1.5 Million in support of Breast Cancer Fund, 20% of which has come from LUNA's community based activism and fundraising efforts.
