~~~~~~~~~Are you a ZEN master contest~~~~~~~~~~~
Manimal is notorious for trashing and bashing his Cannondale, or any other mountain bike he rides for that matter (don't let him near your bike!) He usually does this thru normal riding and not wiping out, so don't worry he doesn't get hurt... Also, he keeps three bikes ready to go, so he always has a spare bike to ride. Enter this contest...
Guess what he will break next and win some free promo items from Web Mountain Bike Store!
Will it be his chain, freewheel, rim, hub, pedal, frame, or whatever else you can think of... (HINT: The bike is now under repair for new upgraded chainrings, rear cluster, and a new chain)
Just e-mail us at manimal@webmountainbike.com and guess which part of his bike will go next!~~ Enter now to win some free accessories!!~~
The first "breakdown" occured while trail riding on rocky single track during a 10 mile ride. Luckily, we were near the trailhead returning to the car. The chain broke while just cruising on some average terrain!
But MAN, when the chain went, my knee hit the handlebar and I had to dismount and almost passed out from the shock! I was fine in a few minutes. Those chains are a pains>>
THE CONTEST GOES ON! Those of you who have entered are still in it... Congratulations to Matt A. and Kevin M. for winning the first round!
The second "breakdown" was a flat front tire. Actually, once again I was lucky! The bike was fine for the ride, but after getting home one hour later, the front tire was flat. A glueless patch quickly remedied the situation. I am ready to roll again, and have a new battery in my trip computer, and am testing the Specialized "body geometry" seat... Congratulations to A. Dion for winning the second round! The CONTEST GOES ON, place you bets...
My third breakdown was a "locked up" freehub body. When this happens, your rear cassette gets locked to the rear axle and you cannot coast. You have to pedal THE WHOLE TIME, and when you get off to push your bike the pedals turn as the wheel rolls. I was able to bike about two miles with it locked up, although timing the logs and rocks was hard without being able to stop pedaling while going over them. My bike had an upgraded XTR freehub body installed, and is quickly back in action. This was a part nobody guessed, and the contest goes on! Place your bets...
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later! As a true beast that he is, Manimal finally broke a spoke and his rear rim is now too bent to true (even with the new spoke)! My bike will see a new Shimano XT hub, Mavic 517 rim, and 36 tripled butted spokes to connect them. Congratulations to Mike at Hotmail.com for being the winner! The contest rolls on~~~~
Riding a rigid Richard Cunningham design Nishiki with an elevated chainstay, I noticed that the numerous log jumps were feeling kind of funny... When I noticed the flat front tire, I rode as far as possible until it went dead (only a few hundred yards). No wonder that last jump felt WEIRD!
Luckily, with the help of Cord's pump and my Glueless patch kit, I was back on the trail within minutes. Congratulations to Todd F. from Georgia for winning the current round with his guess of flat tire. The contest goes on...
Having some shifter problems and selecting quite a rocky trail did in the chain once again. What happened was that the limit screw (H) was not set properly and this allowed the chain to jump off the inside of the casette and break in the process. It had gotten stuck between the largest cog and the wheel a few times after the repair, then I realized the problem and set the limit screw so that it would not go past the big sprocket. Congratulations to John F. for winning!! Ride On...
On a ride last week, I bent the second to largest gear on my freewheel (rear sprocket)... Am now in process of replacing the freewheel with another Shimano XT or XTR, and then maybe a new chain... Since nobody guessed this part, the contest will go on!!! Since this accident, I have learned that you can bend the cog back into position with a good result if you are carefull.... ride on
After putting on my front wheel after taking the bike out of my van to go ride (also joined by 10 schoolkids!), I noticed the front wheel did not turn without rubbing the brake pad (I always spin the wheel after mounting to insure proper mounting - and that the quick release is tight - and that the wheel does not rub). The problem was a broken spoke nipple - the wheel went out of true and the spoke was loose. I could still ride - but there is another winner who guessed a broken spoke just yesterday....
